Renée Johnson
... has always had a passion for helping others express themselves through writing. She graduated from California State University, Hayward with a BA in English, a focus in creative writing, and a minor in psychology. She has a current Clear Single Subject Teaching Credential from National University and is certified to teach Psychology and English with a Cross-cultural, Language & Academic Development Emphasis.
Renée started her career in human resources, writing and managing internal communications projects at Raychem Corporation in Menlo Park. In 1997, her teaching career began with an opportunity to teach English at the Speakeasy Institute in Mar Del Plata, Argentina. After working with groups and individuals developing English as a second language, she became a substitute teacher in schools from Cupertino to Menlo Park, K-12.
She has been a full time English teacher in Palo Alto since 1998. Renée has taught 7th and 8th grade English, along with additional writing courses including remedial composition, creative writing, an after school writing workshop, academic language development, and a summer program, Future Author Camp, for gifted creative writers. Renée has also served in leadership roles as the coordinator of the AVID program and as a trainer for the PAUSD Equity = Excellence Workshops.
In addition, she has worked as a personal writing coach for adults and older teens in writing personal statements and essays for college, MBA programs, and private school applications, as well as formal speeches. She began formally coaching writing and developing her "Writing A Dynamic Personal Statement" approach in 2010. Along with coaching hopeful college applicants, Renée continues to teach English in Palo Alto.
